the USARF Archive

This archive hosts rare issues of Cheche, Majimaji, and related editorial materials from the University Students’ African Revolutionary Front (USARF), preserved in the private collection of Professor Karim Hirji.

USARF was a radical student organization based at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) during the 1970s and 1980s. Rooted in Marxist, Pan-Africanist, and anti-imperialist thought, USARF challenged dominant political ideologies and advocated for socialist transformation across Africa. Through its groundbreaking publications Cheche (“The Spark”) and later Majimaji, the group fostered critical debate on the role of the university, the nature of liberation, and the global struggles against oppression.
