ajabu ajabu was dreamed up in 2020 as a space for collective experimentation around audio-visual preservation, practice, and presentation. established on the ground floor of a historic building on kimweri ave ~~~ the AV house was a screen & studio & home for anyone and everyone inspired by the vision. for 3 years, the space existed (and thrived) as an incubator for all things audio-visual.
in 2023, the building was bought by developers and turned into a luxury hotel.
words from founding member, Jesse Gerard Mpango upon the collective’s eviction:
‘Endangered Spaces’ was the first event hosted at the AV House. Funny that we should begin an insistance on the necessity of gathering - for what is approaching, and soon to exceed 3 years - with cautionary tales. The new light of our reality without that space feels like a dream. A deeply unpleasant one, with fresh vocabularies for remorseless consolodations of wealth and power, but a dream nonetheless. It is at once terrifying and liberating to see how fragile a reality good stories create. Like a reminder that we’ve been dreaming all along. It is basically why we’re here.
